Exhibition Baldwin & Guggisberg in Paris, March 2008

Philip Baldwin & Monica Guggisberg

« CROSSCURRENTS»

Personal exhibition, Paris : 13 th of March – 19 th of april, 2008

When Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg moved their hot glass studio from a farm village in Switzerland to central Paris in 2001 it signalled for them an explosion in their work, from larger pieces to architectural installations, as well as a significant ramping up in their reputation and recognition around the world.

To represent them in Paris today at 6 MANDEL is an opportunity to discover their language within a beautiful canvas, a house of subtle and rich possibility for their oeuvre; a theatrical stage for an opera in glass. It is a joy to share their universe of intelligence and sensitivity.

Growing out of two distinct cultural traditions in glass, that of Sweden - layered colors, sober and clean forms, and that of Italy, with it’s exuberance and rich unique cutting tradition of battuto and inciso (originating with Carlo Scarpa at Venini in the 30s and 40s), their work beautifully transcends the marriage of techniques used in its making.

The tall and spiralling metal spines, in equilibrium with the multiplicity of glass spheres strung upon them, banded like pearls in an expansive array of colors and surfaces, forming abstractions of nature, of geometry, and tactile to touch...the imagination goes to the inner universe of DNA, or the audial expression of a musical score.Line and color are linked in an intimate embrace, in harmony or sharp contrast; a bold affront, or a soft and delicate sensation.
Over fourteen years of constant experimentation, combining traditions from North and South, in a blend unique to themselves, Baldwin and Guggisberg haveacheived an original expression, an art in which they are masters.

About our work

At the end of 2007, we will have been working together as a team for twenty-eight years !
First as students in Sweden, where we assisted Ann Wolff and Wilke Adolfsson (1979-1981), followed by twenty years in Switzerland where we opened our studio in 1982, and subsequently here in Paris, where we moved in 2001.

It has been a kaleidoscopic journey which has brought us through almost every aspect of glass as a medium – craft, design, art, sculpture, architecture. Hot, cold, simple, complex. Our learning curve has been one of constant exploration bound together by certain very basic overarching themes, a love of the material, a sense of art as an expression of beauty, and the driving desire to weave our work with our everyday life, to find joy in what we make, both the process and the results of those processes.

Along the way our engagement with glass has been an ever expanding highway covering our beginnings as a two person « hotshop » making clean, functional designs for everyday use; collaborating with the traditional glass industry as designers, working with factories in Germany, Switzerland, the US and Italy; and bringing us gradually and happily to using glass as an expression of art, a celebration of all that we have learned over the years combining our feelings about color, form, texture, pattern, and material. Having started with a sober and « classic » attitude toward form and shape, we have gradually yielded to an expanded exuberance in both shape and dimension. If seeking original expression of beauty is our driving motivation, clarity of line is the thread which weaves the work together. While a point is a cross section of a line, the line itself runs indefinitely through space without limit. Our work is composed of short moments of these imagined lines, captured in glass, hot and cold. We love what we do, and count on the pleasure we hope our work conveys.
